History
In 1994, Dr Viani was appointed as the first female consultant otolaryngologist in Ireland. The national cochlear implant program was set up with the mission to “provide the gift of sound to the people of Ireland of any age and any gender”.
1994
In 2009 Mr Peter Walshe was appointed as a cochlear implant surgeon. The department’s mission to serve as a major hub for research and teaching has been an ongoing effort.
2009
In the 2019, the department was officially inaugurated as National Hearing Implant and Viani Research Centre (NHIRC), by Mr Leo Varadkar, Taoiseach of Ireland.
2019
1995
In 1995 the first cochlear implantation surgery in Ireland was successfully carried out to an adult patient in March 1995. The following year the first child in Ireland receive his cochlear implant.
2014
In 2014, with the support of the Happy New Ear, the bilateral programme was initiated and Mr. Fergal Glynn was appointed as a third cochlear implant surgeon. The department underwent a major physical and departmental expansion, effectively doubling the number of staffs to 28.
